Life Cycles: How Living Things Grow, Change, and Begin Again
3rd Grade • Science • 10 days
A two-week investigation into how living things grow, reproduce, and pass traits to the next generation. Students launch a germination experiment on Day 2 and tend it all unit, so the plant cycle unfolds in real time on the windowsill while they study it. The arc moves from seed to plant to flower to seed, then widens to compare animal life cycles — complete metamorphosis, incomplete metamorphosis, and direct development — before students build and defend their own life cycle model. Anchored in NGSS 3-LS1-1 (all organisms have life cycles that include birth, growth, reproduction, and death) with a bridge into 3-LS3-1 (offspring resemble their parents but vary). Every day includes a hands-on or model-building component; the summative task on Day 10 is a student-built model with a written explanation, not a multiple-choice test.
